Jul 30 2010 : Email and Text message Fraud on the rise!!!

Some recommended mitigations strategies are as follows:

  1. Do not click on links contained in unsolicited emails received from unknown parties or from parties with whom you do not normally communicate
  2. If malicious code is detected or suspected on a computer, consult with a computer security expert to have it removed
  3. Ensure computers are protected with a firewall and antivirus software with signature files set to automatically update at least weekly
  4. Ensure updated security patches for computer operating systems and software applications are installed on a regular basis
  5. If you feel that you may have responded to a fraudulent message - call the credit union RIGHT AWAY to have your card cancelled and reissued.
  6. We will never ask you to respond to a text message or email by clicking a link or calling any number but the one to our office.
  7. If you receive a call from our office, it will be one of our staff who contacts you.  If you do not recognise that caller, ask to speak with someone you know, or refuse to answer and call us back on our office number.
